Whisky Business in Brisbane

As the temperature starts to drop our NFW, or need for whisky starts to skyrocket. March in Brisbane might not be exactly mild, but give us a cloudy day and we’re reaching for our scarves – and our whisky glasses.

Move over vodka and gin, you’ve had your time in the sun, it’s time to switch over to the dark (spirit) side, and we’ve got the round up on the best places to try a tipple.

Buffalo Bar | CBD

If their range of buffalo wings aren’t enough to get your salivating, the knowledge that Buffalo Bar has 40 American whiskeys in stock certainly will. Knock back a couple neat or try your hand at the Bacon Old Fashioned with bacon infused Buffalo Trace bourbon, maple, orange bitters and crispy bacon. Giddy up cowboy!

The Gresham | CBD

The only heritage bar in Queensland (yes glamour, yes exclusivity!), the Gresham is the perfect spot for a cheeky post work whisky or two. Get sozzled on Old Fashioned or get around a boilermaker or two. They also serve coffee from 7am to cure that impending hangover.

Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall | Caxton Street

Prefer your whisky neat or mixed with the freshest apple juice this side of Stanthorpe? You’re going to have to toe tap your way down to Lefty’s for live music, greasy hangover busting eats and plenty of liquid gold. Feeling athletic? Try your hand at bra flinging and see if you can score a freebie.

Cobbler | West End

With a whisky collection boasting more passport stamps than Carmen Sandiego, Cobbler is renowned for its groaning shelves of whisky from the likes of Scotland, India, America, Japan and China on their shelves. With a team of award winning bartenders behind the stick, if cocktails are your poison – you’ve come to the right apothecary. More serious about keeping it straight than mixing it up? Head to their monthly whisky tasting nights for a taste of the good life.

Malt | CBD

Malt. The very name conjures up images of crystal tumblers filled with clinking ice and amber nectar. Their multiple page offering of whiskeys, cocktails to drink them in and bar food to match lives up to the distinguished name, with everything from the familiar Maker’s Mark to a 31 year old Glendronach with a price tag of $119 a pop.

Savile Rowe | Fortitude Valley

Cobbler’s little sister has the same extensive whisky collection and chilled atmosphere, rare for a bar in the middle of the infamous Fortitude Valley. Step behind the orange door (there’s no sign, just 667) and find yourself transported far away from the usual chaos. Order from their extensive cocktail menu or sip on whisky as you relax under giant chandeliers.

Jack Rabbits | Woolloongabba

Ready to step out of the closet? Pass through the Electric Avenue’s secret wardrobe and into whisky Narnia, Jack Rabbits. With a whisky selection guaranteed to put hare on your chest – Jack Rabbits boasts imports from such exotic, distant lands as Japan, France, Canada and… New Zealand.

If you’d rather than be someone’s shot of whisky than someone’s cup of tea – we know where you’d want to be.

JR/Duty Free | Brisbane Airport

In the most unlikely of places, wander through Brisbane Airport’s JR/Duty Free for a flight before your flight. As well as exclusive whisky’s that aren’t available elsewhere, you’ll find the most diverse selection of whisky as well as the opportunity to have a few free tastings before you fly. Read all about it here!
